Welcome addresses from António M. Cunha, University of Minho Rector

Welcome to the University of Minho (UMinho). It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the X World University Championship of Karate.

This Championship is an occasion of great significance as it raises the sporting profiles of the participating institutions – the UMinho, Minho University´s Student Union, the Portuguese Sports Federation (FADU) and the FISU - International University Sport.

This event brings together more than 400 young people from 40 different countries, and through the sport of karate both establishes and reinforces friendships and mutual understanding.

Throughout these Games, all the participants will learn more about UMinho, Braga, Minho Region and Portugal.  We are all proud to have been chosen to host this year´s Championship. Here, you will find a fitting place in which to compete, surrounded by history and culture. Minho University is a highly renowned institution, both nationally and internationally, in the areas of teaching, research and community projects.

Together with the Student´s Union, we have organized over the years several world and European big Student sporting tournaments.

In the university you will find excellent sports facilities, high standards of technical assistance and prompt aid and support from all the officials and volunteers. Organizing this major event, building on past successes, has further strengthened our commitment to karate.

This Championship will be a showcase of Karate and I am sure we will all be fortunate to witness many talented performances and bear witness to exemplary conduct throughout the event. So, I urge all the participants to take the opportunity to fully display your skills and a spirit of comradeship.

I wish you every success as well as a very pleasant stay.

António M. Cunha
